How To Fit A Martingale Collar

Martingale collars are a popular choice for dog owners seeking better control of their pet in a safe and comfortable way. Designed to tighten gently when a dog pulls, they help prevents dogs from escaping their leads while avoiding the choking effect of traditional slip collars.
This is particularly useful for dogs with narrower heads, such as greyhounds and whippets, alongside nervous or reactive dogs that might try to back out of a collar.
They also distribute pressure evenly and support leash training.
However, a martingale collar is a tool, and like any tool, it only works properly if used correctly!
Follow the guide below to ensure you correctly fit the martingale to make sure that the collar is worn safely, and comfortably!

Start with the widest setting
Fully extend the collar. This gives you the maximum opening so it can comfortably go over your dog’s head.

Slip it over the head.
Gently slide the collar over the widest part of the head. If it’s a struggle, the size might be too small.

Notice the loose fit?
Once it is on, you'll see it's far too big - that's normal at this stage.

Adjust the size.
Tighten the collar until it sits snugly around the middle of the neck. Not too high, not too low.

Find the right fit.
This is how the collar looks once it's been tightened to the correct setting.

Do the two finger check.
You should be able to slide two fingers comfortably under the collar. This ensures it's secure but never restrictive.

Check the safety gap.
When you pull on the martingale loop, the metal hardware should NEVER touch when the collar tightens. That small gap is what keeps the collar safe and effective.
